Are Period Underwear Safe? Myths and Misconceptions
Posted on August 15, 2024
Period Underwear, Product and Care
Period undies have gained popularity for their comfort, convenience, and environmentally-conscious benefits, but there are still myths and misconceptions surrounding their safety and effectiveness.
Let’s clear up the facts and debunk some common myths about period underwear.
Are period undies safe?
Yes, period underwear is generally safe to wear. Here’s why:
- Absorbent and breathable: Period underwear is designed with absorbent layers that wick away moisture, keeping you dry and comfortable. They are often made from breathable materials like cotton or moisture-wicking fabrics
- Antibacterial options: Triumph period underwear incorporates advanced antibacterial features, utilising innovative fabrics and treatments to help maintain freshness and hygiene during menstruation.
- No chemicals: Quality period underwear is free from harmful chemicals like bleach or fragrances that can irritate sensitive skin.
Can period underwear cause health issues?
Let’s address some concerns:
- Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS): Period underwear does not pose a risk of TSS, unlike tampons. TSS is associated with the use of super-absorbent tampons and is caused by bacterial toxins
- Bacterial Vaginosis (BV): While rare, BV can occur if period underwear is not properly cleaned or if moisture is trapped for extended periods. It’s essential to change your period underwear regularly and follow proper hygiene practices
- Itching, UTIs, and Yeast Infections: Properly maintained period underwear should not cause itching, UTIs, or yeast infections. Ensure you change them regularly, wash them properly, and avoid wearing them for prolonged periods without changing.
Are period pants sanitary?
Yes, period underwear is sanitary when used and cared for correctly:
- Proper cleaning: Wash period underwear according to the manufacturer’s instructions using gentle detergent and ensure they are completely dry before wearing them again to prevent bacteria growth. For more in-depth information, check out our guide on how to wash period underwear.
- Change regularly: Change your period underwear according to the manufacturer’s recommended instructions and your own needs. If you notice wetness, it’s definitely time to change them.
Here’s a quick guide for when to change your period underwear
- Light flow: Change every 12 hours
- Moderate to heavy flow: Change every 6-8 hours, or whenever you feel some wetness.
